Jury Statement:
The videomapping works submitted to the KAZ_LAB 2025 competition showcased diverse approaches and creative reinterpretations of the Kazimierz district. Some artists chose to reconstruct its history, characters, and events in a literal audiovisual form, while others focused more on the memory of the place — its fragility and fragmentariness. These works addressed universal themes through layered and metaphorical visual narratives.
The submissions varied in artistic style, technical quality, and effort. Given today’s creative context, the open or implied use of artificial intelligence tools was also present and formed part of the jury’s discussion. For these reasons, the jury decided to modify the prize distribution and not to award a third prize.
First prize was awarded to the collective TVING & KOWA for their work “The Light of Absence”. The artists created a minimalist play of light and shadow on the façade of HEVRE, building their narrative on shifts, rhythm, architectural pulse, and 3D scans of the interior. Combined with a dynamic soundtrack, the piece explored the themes of identity, memory, and the interweaving of past and present.
Second prize went to Tomasz Strojecki for his piece “L’Dor V’Dor”, inspired by frescoes discovered inside the former synagogue that now houses HEVRE. The project’s minimalist approach to the mapping form invited reflection on the intergenerational transmission and endurance of Jewish culture.
Both awarded works stood out in terms of artistic quality and originality, departing from clichéd and repetitive tropes often associated with videomapping. The jury appreciated that the artists crafted narratives not through excess and spectacle, but through nuanced, restrained, and thoughtful artistic solutions.
Honourable mentions were given to three projects: the collective Krzywo Rzucone (Weronika Stosur and Jan Tomicki), Rudi Kurnia, and Patrick Grandi — for their in-depth engagement with the history and cultural heritage of Kazimierz, and their creative approaches.
We sincerely congratulate all the participants and wish them continued success in their artistic careers.
Respectfully,
The Jury:
Maciej Gniady, Jacek Krok, Justyna Łabądź, Małgorzata Łuczyna, Jacek Złoczowski
